WEG Feature Film Lab

The WEG Feature Film Lab will host a cohort of emerging South Florida based filmmakers from underrepresented communities as they develop their feature films in an intensive six-week career development and pitch lab.

The lab will be led by Christina Campagnola who will aid the filmmakers in honing their creative voice, creating a career plan, and developing visual materials and a pitch.

During the six week fellowship, fellows will receive one-on-one mentoring from Campagnola and prepare for the WEGx P¡tch competition where fellows will have an opportunity to pitch their projects to a distinguished panel of funders, distributors, and producers in front of a live audience. Lab fellows will also be mentored by visiting industry guests in preparation for their pitches during the six week lab. Additionally, they will be introduced to the distinguished WEGx P¡tch panelists during WEGx to discuss their individual work face to face.

Built to provide underrepresented creators with tangible opportunities to grow their careers through mentorship and access to industry leaders. Christina Campagnola acts as each fellow's manager, fitting a career's worth of wisdom into a two month intensive lab.

The WEG Feature Film Lab seeks not only to prepare participants to engage leading industry stakeholders with their own work, but also to celebrate the revolutionary narrative/scripted work currently being produced in South Florida.

The WEG Feature Film Lab is open to any and all current residents of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties. Applications are open until February 5th 2024, and will be found here until the application deadline.

Lab designer, Christina Campagnola, is a founding partner and literary manager at GRLBND, an all-female owned and operated management and production company with a focus on underrepresented voices. She began her management career at Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's, Imagine. Prior to management, she was a literary agent at APA (Agency for the Performing Arts) where she represented screenwriters and directors and launched their Independent Film Packaging and Sales division.

FAQs

I'm developing a project with a partner/team. Can my whole team apply?
Yes. Make sure you add everyone who is on your team to the application.
 Can only women apply?
No. This lab is for people of all gender identities.
Is there a cash prize or stipend attached to the Fellowship?
Unfortunately, no. While we hope we can do it in the future, the inaugural lab does not come with a cash prize or a stipend. Instead, the lab focuses on education, mentorship, and skill building in anticipation of the WEGx P¡tch event.
Can I apply with multiple projects?
Yes. However, we recommend applying with no more than 3 feature film projects. But you are free to apply as many times as you'd like.
When is the deadline to apply?
The last day to submit your application will be February 5th, 2024.
What is the goal of the WEG Feature Film Lab?
The goal of the lab is to mentor South Florida filmmakers that are working on feature length scripted projects, to create direct access to national film industry leaders, and ultimately to further the individual careers of participating lab fellows. This program seeks to foster fruitful, long term relationships with funders, distributors and producers from the national and international film industries.
Who is the WEG Feature Film Lab for?
The Lab is a career development-oriented opportunity for filmmakers who have cut their teeth on projects already and are prepared for a platform to present their project  to the industry and larger national and international markets.

More specifically, the lab is for any filmmaker currently living in either Miami-Dade, Broward or Monroe Counties who has demonstrably produced, written and/or directed at least one short film prior to submitting their application and has a scripted feature length project they're currently writing or developing.
What should I have ready for my application?
Your application will focus on you as a filmmaker as well as one project you’re working on that you’d like to pitch at WEGx. As such, please include

1. A bio of yourself (if submitting as a team, include bios for each team member)

2. A logline for the project you hope to pitch at WEGx.

3. A synopsis of that same project.

4. An artist statement

5. Resume (if submitting as a team, please submit individual resumes for each team member)

6. Samples of previous work

7. A completed script OR a detailed treatment of the script (must describe the entire story from beginning to end in as much detail as possible)

8. Ability to virtually attend Lab meetings between March 3-April 8th, 2024

9. Ability to attend WEGx events on April 20th and April 21st, 2024

10. Ability to thoughtfully answer specific questions about you, your work, your intended audience, your intention in applying to the program and your experience as both an artist and a person.
I'm not sure what some of the things listed above are...
Do your best to research and answer your questions. If you tried and you're still not sure, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]
Do I really have to have a completed script or a detailed treatment?
Yes
No, but... like, what kind of treatment do you want?
We're looking for as detailed a treatment as you can give us. The idea is for you to make the best case for your project that you possibly can. As such, we're not giving specific requirements on treatment length and so on. We are looking for treatments that paint as detailed and nuanced a picture as possible.
What dates would I need to be available for the lab?
This intensive lab will be taking place virtually, meeting once a week for 2-3 hours from March 3rd, 2024 to April 8th, 2024. The WEGx P¡tch event is during WEGx (the weekend of April 20th and 21st, 2024).
Is the lab accepting documentary projects?
The lab is only accepting applications for narrative works.
What "distinguished industry leaders" will Lab Fellows be pitching for?
We will be announcing the illustrious WEGx P¡tch panel via social media and our email newsletter. Follow us on IG/Twitter (@WEGFilms) subscribe to our email newsletter to be in the loop!
Does getting an invitation to this lab fellowship mean WEG owns or controls anything I created as part of the lab (or otherwise)?
No. If you receive an invitation, any project developed/pitched/worked on is strictly your project. We want it to be successful. We don't demand anything in return except your enthusiastic participation. That being said, if you want to bring us in, let’s talk!
